What is special about Paediatric 2D echocardiography test in babies ? How is it different from that of adults?

Following factors makes neonatal and paediatric 2D echo more challenging than adult 2D echo. Hearts of neonates and infants are very small as compared to adults. To achieve good resolution image in smaller structure, high frequency probes are required. Also, smaller foot pad of paediatric and neonatal probes allow good contact. These all factor contribute to high quality image and accurate diagnosis. Another important difference is that of man behind machine. Diseases of neonates, infants are different from that of adults and require dedicated advanced training.Paediatric 2D echocardiography examination require longer time than adult. Many times babies do not co operate. Test are done with help of mild sedation.The test is generally carried out by paediatric cardiologist who has undergone advanced training in the field.
